summer books to read & listen to

($ this post contains affiliate links which may be monetized $)

hey all!

to me, summer has always been the best time for pleasure reading. honestly, during the year, i REALLY can’t get any done, i was always too worried about homework, after school activities and social life (let alone my blog too!) to get any reading that i wanted done. i was never one of my classmates who didn’t read the school books, i always read those (i get it, i’m a nerd) but i genuinely like to read, and because i was getting graded on it why not! since its finally summer, i am back in action with my reading! with almost 3 weeks down i have completed two books AND i’m working on a third – and finally feel better about getting back to reading.

since summer is MY favorite pleasure reading time

as always, a note to all my readers – this post does not mean i own any of the above, or that i will buy any of the above. it just means that i like it visually and (unless noted) i do not own it; all that i will write about is stuff i hear from friends and other users of the product as well as the visual aspects of the product which i will mention in the comment below!

c2sl-square-orig.jpgfeminist fight club (listened & loved)

this nonfiction, almost self-help guide taught about the dangerousness of qualifiers (ie: “not sure if this is right” etc), the importance of mentors and simply how each one of us can bring up another in the workforce in any field. it was amazing because it quoted studied, important female empowerers and used examples of famous women and what they did or did not do to complete their goals.

i listened on audiobook & finished in four days, would recommend as a “beach read”, or a good thing to listen to while you drive through traffic!

the animators (out of my mind LOVED) download

as an art major, i could not relate harder to the prologue, its insane, and i feel how thats gonna be already due to the narration. the class and the teacher felt all so real to me. but the book REALLY gets going about 3 chapters in with an INSANE plot device. it made me laugh, cry, laugh and cry again. so many things were amazing about this novel, and its probably one of the best i’ve read in awhile, and i really mean it.

i’ve gotten a pretty far way into the book. the characters are interesting – the dialogue is a little cliche and expected, but the details are what i am HERE FOR. and as an artist, i know how sharon feels to be ‘not the best in the room’. for a fiction book its just the perfect length to keep you going.

i’m pulling from overdrive’s summary here: “Set within a contemporary black community in Southern California, Brit Bennett’s mesmerizing first novel is an emotionally perceptive story about community, love, and ambition. It begins with a secret.”

i honestly only clicked it because of the cover. #judgingbooksontheircovers, but i read the synopsis and it was so entirely intriguing, so i put it on my list.

c3zo-square-orig.jpghere i am (great author)

lets get it straight here, all of the rest of these summaries will be from overdrive. “Unfolding over four tumultuous weeks in present-day Washington, D.C., Here I Amis the story of a fracturing family in a moment of crisis. As Jacob and Julia Bloch and their three sons are forced to confront the distances between the lives they think they want and the lives they are living, a catastrophic earthquake sets in motion a quickly escalating conflict in the Middle East. At stake is the meaning of home—and the fundamental question of how much aliveness one can bear.”

“Friends and former college bandmates Elizabeth and Andrew and Zoe have watched one another marry, buy real estate, and start businesses and families, all while trying to hold on to the identities of their youth. But nothing ages them like having to suddenly pass the torch to their own offspring.” – overdrive

this one has been on the list for awhile, and i feel as though i might have shared this before, but i want to read it

51SJjlmVGpL._SX324_BO1,204,203,200_the girls (pure cult fun)

“Northern California, during the violent end of the 1960s. At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park, and is immediately caught by their freedom, their careless dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon, Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader.” – overdrive

with unlimited great reviews, this one seems like a really amazing novel, and i’ve sorta been obssessed with listening to crazy cult stories, because they are just real and terrifying enough to deal with.

4164RkY1yFL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_when: the scientific secrets of perfect timing (non-fiction!)

“Pink shows that timing is really a science. Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology, and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work, and succeed. How can we use the hidden patterns of the day to build the ideal schedule?  How can we turn a stumbling beginning into a fresh start? Why is singing in time with other people as good for you as exercise? And what is the ideal time to quit a job, switch careers, or get married?” – overdrive

41GlixPmiiL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_asking for it (hard but important topic)

“From Congressman Todd Akin’s “legitimate rape” gaffe to the high school rapists of Steubenville, Ohio, to the furor at Vanderbilt, sexual violence has been so prominent in recent years that the feminist term “rape culture” has finally entered the mainstream. But what, exactly, is it? And how do we change it?” – overdrive
