hey all!
of course, if you’ve been following my blog for a while i have talked A LOT about redo-ing my room over the years, and suprisingly, i have never done it. maybe it is cause i didn’t have enough time but one thing i can say with authority about my room is that i have been extremely lazy in cleaning it! so, in getting my general act together during this time of the virus i have made cleaning my room a major priority, and with that a priority to fix up my room and sell the things i no longer need in order to help fix up my room!
first, i prioritized cleaning my room – which included my closets and cabinets filled with products, accessories and clothes that i no longer wore, that no longer fit me or that no longer fit my style. i was able to donate items that were too worn to sell online to some of my local thrift stores and i was also able to designate items of importance to me (t-shirts from when i was young from camps and etc) to make into a quilt. this was a major way to clean out my closets, giving me tons more room and making everything fit in a way which i was happier with. i designated a pile of ‘poshmark’ worthy items, or items that were new, LIKE new, and even tagged things which were never worn or used.
you can shop my poshmark store for new and lightly used items in my sidebar now or click here! additionally, i have been making and selling scrunchies from used and vintage clothes so they’re completely sustainable and are making use of low waste practices!
this way, i am getting rid of items i can no longer use or love, making it better for my room and my bank account because i can reinvest that money back into making my room a place i love being in!
second! to save money on ‘wall art’ like posters and stuff i’ve been making a lot of stuff myself! i mean i have the clear benefit of being a graphic designer and a person who is artistically inclined (which helps with a lot of fixing up my room in general) but i have been enjoying designing things and painting things for my room! additionally, over the years with my travels and etc i have collected vintage prints, postcards and more which usually cost under $5 but look really great when placed in a frame with a ‘mat’ of LITERALLY just white printer paper!
here are a few of my favorite postcards and cards which i collected in london (all for under $5 ~american~ dollars!) in some frames either purchased from tj maxx for under $7 or from this neutral frame set on amazon (under $10 for the set of 3!)
additionally! there are cheap prints AND YOU CAN ORDER POSTCARDS on redbubble! and i even infact make some!
third, because i have been fortunate enough to be successful in selling some of my stuff or things i have created I NOW GET TO SHOP! (just a little i am trying to not go crazy y’all!). so i started a list of things that i will end up spending money on during this process. i made a series of lists of items i will probably buy on scale of importance!
#1: need
under this catergory are items like a new bedspread or new sheets, the bare minimum of what makes a bed a bed, which is the most essential in a room
#2: items to finish projects
under this catergory are items like spackling to fill the holes in my walls, cleaning products to help me wash my walls, fixing my ceiling (which has a few cracks in it) and paint to finish off my room because although i finally took the nursery wallpaper off, the paint in my room is at least 18 years old.
#3: want & are a DIY project
certain items like floating shelves to hold my purses and little trinkets fall under this category and as well are items to refurbish some of my furniture and items which i already own!
#4: want for aesthetic reasons and would help me organize
this would be like purse stands (that I SAW ON TIKTOK and fell in love with), necklace stands and hooks for my stuff!
#5: would not be life-changing but i probably should do to finish my room
under this category are new curtains (i have some but they now no longer fit my aesthetic!), my lamp (once again not bad or anything wrong with it but it doesn’t fit the look i want for my room anymore) and a new light fixture.
#6: EXTRAS! and random fun items to make the room very ME!
THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE FUN CATEGORY! this are those pretty coffee table books, the vases, the plants and other random items to be strewn around my room when i finish!
by making these categories i have thus organized my own thoughts and my bank account! i know what i can spend on the lower # categories because i have mapped out how much money i must spend on #1&2 first.
i wanted to let you that even though i am a ‘blogger’ (whatever that means to you) i don’t have an insane unlimited budget for my clothes, projects and etc. at the end of the day, i am a college student who funds her projects and exciting things i get to do by myself. i acknowledge that this is a privilege that i GET to do this and share it with you and because my money has ESPECIALLY been super tight lately (and with the virus) that it is possible to end up with a situation you end up loving despite it all!
and of course, i couldn’t end this post without sharing my current shopping faves for my room and stuff i think you’d love too!
