Podcasts I Listen to // November 2018

November 5, 2018

hey all!
something that many people know about me is that i am a podcast fiend. i love listening to people talk about things and its so easy to walk around campus, shop in whole foods and run while listening to people talk. i love listening to new things, hearing new opinions and hearing passionate and intelligent people. so podcasts are for me, sure some of them can be very ‘npr’ and have a monotonous tone, however, when the subject is interesting you can totally get past all that! luckily enough for you, i’ve got some super interesting podcasts for you today!
i have cited below where i’ve obtained the summary or about the podcast, so only the opinions listed are my own!

serial-itunes-logoserial

season one: adnan syed “A high-school senior named Hae Min Lee disappeared one day after school in 1999, in Baltimore County, Maryland. A month later, her body was found in a city park. She’d been strangled. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime, and within a year, he was sentenced to life in prison. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae’s body. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. Many others don’t.
Sarah Koenig sorted through thousands of documents, listened to trial testimony and police interrogations, and talked to everyone she could find who remembered what happened between Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee. She discovered that the trial covered up a far more complicated story than the jury – or the public – ever got to hear. The high school scene, the shifting statements to police, the prejudices, the sketchy alibis, the scant forensic evidence — all of it leads back to the most basic questions: How can you know a person’s character? How can you tell what they’re capable of? In Season One of Serial, she looks for answers.” – serial
there is also a season two: bowe bergdahl and a season three: cleaveland. although the first season is easily the best, the other two are also fantastic. the first season had me going. is he guilty? is he not? and back and forth the entire time, never really knowing whether or not the man committed the crime. the series is SERIOUSLY so gripping, once you start you will not be able to stop until you’re done and when you’re done you’ll think about it for a long, long, long time.

s-town-podcast-2s-town

“S-Town is a new podcast from Serial and This American Life, hosted by Brian Reed, about a man named John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks Brian to investigate the son of a wealthy family who’s allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But then someone else ends up dead, and the search for the truth leads to a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man’s life.
Brian, a longtime This American Life producer, started reporting this story more than three years ago, when he got an email from John with the subject line “John B McLemore lives in Shittown Alabama.”” – s-town website
a partner of this american life & serial, s-town is such a compelling and interesting story. we start with john b mclemore and things change and things go from expected to unexpected really quickly. its really easy to binge because its super intriguing and there’s only one season so beware!

“This American Life is a weekly public radio program and podcast. Each week we choose a theme and put together different kinds of stories on that theme.
Mostly we do journalism, but an entertaining kind of journalism that’s built around plot. In other words, stories! Our favorite sorts of stories have compelling people at the center of them, funny moments, big feelings, surprising plot twists, and interesting ideas. Like little movies for radio.” – TAL
i love this american life. its just so heart warming and really feels like you’re listening to a documentary in a podcast, just listen to it and you’ll understand.

EAR_BeautifulAnonymous_Cover_1600x1600_Final-2-300x300beautiful stories from anonymous people

“1 phone call. 1 hour. No names. No holds barred. That’s the premise behind Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People, hosted by comedian Chris Gethard (the Chris Gethard Show, Broad City, This American Life, and one of Time Out’s “10 best comedians of 2015”). Every week, Chris opens the phone line to one anonymous caller, and he can’t hang up first, no matter what. From shocking confessions and family secrets to philosophical discussions and shameless self-promotion, anything can and will happen!” – earwolf
i ran into chris gethard’s podcast in ads for other podcasts, i was intrigued because i had never heard of anything like it. chris is a really amazing comedian who talks to an anonymous stranger for an hour about anything of their choice. its kinda crazy and maybe doesn’t see like its so interesting but its one of the most amazing things ever. everyone has a unique and interesting story and i always love to listen.
