Podcasts I Listen to // November 2018

November 5, 2018

hey all!
something that many people know about me is that i am a podcast fiend. i love listening to people talk about things and its so easy to walk around campus, shop in whole foods and run while listening to people talk. i love listening to new things, hearing new opinions and hearing passionate and intelligent people. so podcasts are for me, sure some of them can be very ‘npr’ and have a monotonous tone, however, when the subject is interesting you can totally get past all that! luckily enough for you, i’ve got some super interesting podcasts for you today!
i have cited below where i’ve obtained the summary or about the podcast, so only the opinions listed are my own!

serial-itunes-logoserial

season one: adnan syed “A high-school senior named Hae Min Lee disappeared one day after school in 1999, in Baltimore County, Maryland. A month later, her body was found in a city park. She’d been strangled. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime, and within a year, he was sentenced to life in prison. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae’s body. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. Many others don’t.
Sarah Koenig sorted through thousands of documents, listened to trial testimony and police interrogations, and talked to everyone she could find who remembered what happened between Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee. She discovered that the trial covered up a far more complicated story than the jury – or the public – ever got to hear. The high school scene, the shifting statements to police, the prejudices, the sketchy alibis, the scant forensic evidence — all of it leads back to the most basic questions: How can you know a person’s character? How can you tell what they’re capable of? In Season One of Serial, she looks for answers.” – serial
there is also a season two: bowe bergdahl and a season three: cleaveland. although the first season is easily the best, the other two are also fantastic. the first season had me going. is he guilty? is he not? and back and forth the entire time, never really knowing whether or not the man committed the crime. the series is SERIOUSLY so gripping, once you start you will not be able to stop until you’re done and when you’re done you’ll think about it for a long, long, long time.

s-town-podcast-2s-town

“S-Town is a new podcast from Serial and This American Life, hosted by Brian Reed, about a man named John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks Brian to investigate the son of a wealthy family who’s allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But then someone else ends up dead, and the search for the truth leads to a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man’s life.
Brian, a longtime This American Life producer, started reporting this story more than three years ago, when he got an email from John with the subject line “John B McLemore lives in Shittown Alabama.”” – s-town website
a partner of this american life & serial, s-town is such a compelling and interesting story. we start with john b mclemore and things change and things go from expected to unexpected really quickly. its really easy to binge because its super intriguing and there’s only one season so beware!

icon_381444650-04c1bad8586e69edf04b78ea319846614c4a6a6bthis american life

“This American Life is a weekly public radio program and podcast. Each week we choose a theme and put together different kinds of stories on that theme.
Mostly we do journalism, but an entertaining kind of journalism that’s built around plot. In other words, stories! Our favorite sorts of stories have compelling people at the center of them, funny moments, big feelings, surprising plot twists, and interesting ideas. Like little movies for radio.” – TAL
i love this american life. its just so heart warming and really feels like you’re listening to a documentary in a podcast, just listen to it and you’ll understand.

EAR_BeautifulAnonymous_Cover_1600x1600_Final-2-300x300beautiful stories from anonymous people

“1 phone call. 1 hour. No names. No holds barred. That’s the premise behind Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People, hosted by comedian Chris Gethard (the Chris Gethard Show, Broad City, This American Life, and one of Time Out’s “10 best comedians of 2015”). Every week, Chris opens the phone line to one anonymous caller, and he can’t hang up first, no matter what. From shocking confessions and family secrets to philosophical discussions and shameless self-promotion, anything can and will happen!” – earwolf
i ran into chris gethard’s podcast in ads for other podcasts, i was intrigued because i had never heard of anything like it. chris is a really amazing comedian who talks to an anonymous stranger for an hour about anything of their choice. its kinda crazy and maybe doesn’t see like its so interesting but its one of the most amazing things ever. everyone has a unique and interesting story and i always love to listen.

EAR_COVER_GettingCurious_3000x3000_B-300x300getting curious with jonathan van ness

“A weekly exploration of all the things Jonathan Van Ness (Queer Eye, Gay of Thrones) is curious about. Come on a journey with Jonathan and experts in their respective fields as they get curious about anything and everything under the sun” – earwolf
you guys know i love queer eye, and this podcast features the show’s iconic JVN, the grooming specialist. he’s more than just a groomer, although he started as a hairdresser he’s so incredibly hilarious, iconic and intelligent. he’s so passionate about so many different topics and allows me to learn and get curious about new and unusual subjects.

5549071b8e91edc4dd373526df7cd64d6289c12808e632e2afece7e0258979c0cd5e5848a8e86eebd1e6ebeea8681ac37a23e87c01ade7584ed0bb4480997f06the good place: the podcast

“Holy motherforking shirtballs! This is the official comedy and entertainment podcast for NBC’s TV show The Good Place. Subscribe and you’ll get weekly behind-the-scenes stories, episode and performance insights and funny anecdotes. Hosted by actor Marc Evan Jackson (Shawn) with a rotating slate of co-hosts and special guests, including actors, writers, producers and more, this podcast takes a deep dive into everything on- and off-screen.” – art19
so i guess if you don’t watch the good place this isn’t for you, but i guess what i am saying is that you should watch the good place. this podcast goes behind the scenes of the show’s story, production and characters. it features sean aka mark evan jackson interviewing the creators, writers, actors and almost anyone in the production scene! its super cool and i always love to listen.

season1-coverartfelonious florida

“Beyond the beaches, the theme parks, the palm trees and the warm breezes lies the dark side of the Sunshine State. Wondery and the South Florida Sun Sentinel present a true-crime podcast that brings you stories of some of Florida’s most notorious and stunning crimes.” – felonious florida.
okay, so you’re always hearing about how scary florida can be? here ya go. for some reason its so interesting to listen to true crime podcasts so i basically do it all the time. if you’re like me, go ahead and give this one a lesson. the murder of the first season is totally intriguing.

downloadthe daily

“This is what the news should sound like. The biggest stories of our time, told by the best journalists in the world. Hosted by Michael Barbaro. Twenty minutes a day, five days a week, ready by 6 a.m.” – NYT
yes this is exactly what you think it is. daily news focusing mainly on one story at a time that is in the news today. you can hear about everything from MBS and polls al the way down to voting and womens rights. yes, its interesting and i love it.

enjoy all & happy listening!

10/2018

October 30, 2018

hey all!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! i had an amazing pre-halloweekend and i’m ready for a super fun night and post-halloweekend!! october was  midterms month and the first time i felt loke i was super secure in my classes! how exciting! i’ve been in school for two months now and its actually crazy to think i have already reached through the first half of my first semester. i am holding onto time like crazy but its been moving all so fast i can’t believe that october is already over, i’m so sad!
anyway, on with the show,
2018-10-06 11:27:19.254

i got to visit the supreme court during the kavanaugh voting process. it was such an amazing experience to see how history was LITERALLY moving around me, and being written as i walked around the capitol area. this is what i came here for, but its so weird when it happens right in front of my own eyes.

2018-10-13 11:23:12.270.JPG

for homework, i got to explore the national gallery of art east building. i was doing a project for both my sculpture class and my art history class and was looking for pieces which fit a theme for me. i was super excited and even got to see some of the pieces i was studying this semester in art history.

2018-10-13 11:20:03.431.JPG

one of my assignments for my sculpture class was attending the rachel whiteread show at the NGA east building. whiteread is a fierce british female artist who largely makes casts of other things using many different materials. right now, in sculpture we’re doing casting so it came at a really amazing time! the show was AMAZING and was really inspiring.

56114231042__8798AE90-A206-493B-B923-032C80BAA108.jpeg

i got to visit city center dc. city center is this really cool outdoor mall in DC, i’m pretty sure its so new that it only really came out like this past year. they had these umbrellas up which was this really cool outdoor/public art display! super cool!

5C058FAA-6646-4FFF-AEC2-ADE0B212288E.JPG

one of the things i’ve joined since starting at gwu is the gw style magazine. its an organization for those of us interested in fashion and publication and i thought, what would be better for me right? anyway, we did this awesome photo shoot which turned out really well – i love this shot of me above.

IMG_9237.jpeg

as you know from my plaid pants post, i got to visit georgetown! i just love how beautiful it is, especially as it is sorta becoming fall because its just so majestically the classic fall i always wanted to be able to experience. in such a beautiful place.

0977CEDD-0533-4F99-A632-4A73B7936594.JPG

if you follow me on instagram, its more than likely that you’ve heard about compass coffee. compass is a local coffee house with branches all over the city. i usually go to the mcpherson square one and go and study with a latte. not only is it a peaceful way to get off campus but i also get their amazing lattes and peanut butter cookies.

2018-10-26 08:52:00.586.JPG

more than anything the thing that makes me so excited about DC is the exploring. i’ve been able to have different experiences and see so many new things. i seriously love this place and want to see all it has to offer! have y’all been to DC? do you have any suggestions as to where i should explore next?

enjoy my friends & happy halloween!

Frank's Body Scrub

October 29, 2018

all products c/o franks body!! & ($ this post contains affiliate links which may be monetized $)

hey all!!
happy fall! this past weekend we had CRAZY weather. it was cold and rainy and made my runs and going out so much harder because its becoming much more of a drag to get outside and get stuff done which is really sad because i love my city! one big thing i’ve noticed about this fall and winter-y weather is my skin! i’ve been getting super dry, and i’m pretty sure the weather is the main culprit.
at home i never really had insanely dry skin. during the ‘winter’ my skin always got a bit dry and i just coutered with lotion. here i’ve been trying to counter with lotion but i’ve got to admit that it isn’t really working 100%.

Processed with VSCO with dog3 preset
well what do you do when your dry skin isn’t going away? BODY SCRUB! y’all know i love frank’s body – read about their skincare here – and i’ve used the coffee scrub in the past for some minor keratosis pilaris on my arms and other minor skin issues but i just knew when the weather changed that i was in bad luck. and then, frank’s came in! they reached out and i knew it would be the perfect solution to my ultimate dry winter skin of the east coast!
they sent me their original coffee scrub (which i’m already a HUGE fan of) and their express-o scrub (their new whipped solution!) which i was so excited to try out!
Processed with VSCO with dog3 preset
i was familiar with the usual product which you usually you know: massage scrub over your body, leave for 3 minutes. i love the original product, but we all know it gets messy, it goes everywhere but it smells so so so good! so i was so excited to whipped scrub because its supposed to be so much cleaner!
AND IT IS! it was unbelievable how amazing it was! it smelled just as amazing and worked just as well without all of that crazy mess! the texture was a bit different (naturally because its whipped) and it was just super creamy and amazing.
after using for a few weeks i’ve seen a pretty big difference in my skin because i’m removing that nasty top dry layer. it’s so much better, its insane! my skin is super moist now so its really amazing product!
shop original coffee scrub
& shop express-o scrub

enjoy readers!

College Fitness Update + Fall Playlist

October 26, 2018

hey all!
as you can tell from the title, we’re discussing fitness. yes, yes again i’m mentioning, this has been a requested post and i felt like i should talk about fitness since i’ve talked about food and clothes already it seems like the most natural way to do this!
let’s get started.
i made my health a priority in the second half of high school. after sophomore year and deciding to quit basketball i felt an extreme lull in my fitness. i wasn’t doing a winter sport and i had absolutely no reason to keep in shape, so i decided to start getting into shape for myself. at that point i ran three times a week and trained my arms in the weight room and walked on saturdays and sundays. then over that summer, i did my 28-day reset which required 3-blogilates videos and workouts 5 days a week and then i also began walking everyday in order to finish my 10,000 steps from my fitbit.
then i started senior year and after golf season i began running everyday. i really liked running and soon went from 2-3 miles to more. i continued running everyday this past summer before college and right up until i started school.
college has been most of the same. i try to run everyday. i perfer running outside and will do it unless its POURING RAIN. i was so excited to run here because i have a beautiful route! i live very close to the national mall and although i change it up i usually do a monument run and occasionally (about 1-2) per week run from lincoln to the capitol (approx 6 miles) but mostly i run between 4-5 miles.
especially since starting school here i’ve been running alot. i really love it actually and have been listening to many podcasts and lots of music. i love being able to run because i can just forget about the world for like 7.5 seconds of my day and just enjoy myself!
anyway, here’s my fall playlist!

enjoy!

Must Haves: Go-to Clothes for Class

October 24, 2018

($ this post contains affiliate links which may be monetized $)

hey all!
remember when i made my ‘college night routine’ post and the ‘college going out clothes‘ post and i had mentioned that i have gotten some requests for college related posts and this is another post i’ve gotten SEVERAL requests for. one of the major things that i’ve been getting used to is not wearing a uniform, i worked at j.crew this summer and had a basic ‘uniform’ there because i wore lots of summer stuff & nice j.crew stuff (which is stuff i wear anyway) but one of the biggest things for me has been figuring out what i wear for class.
as i mentioned, i have almost never worn ‘real’ clothes to classes before so i’m finally learning about how to dress for ~normal everyday life!~ and thats pretty exciting. so today i wanted to share some similar items that i’ve been wearing a lot during my first two months in school!
as always, a note to all my readers – this post does not mean i own any of the above, or that i will buy any of the above. it just means that i like it visually and (unless noted) i do not own it; all that i will write about is stuff i hear from friends and other users of the product as well as the visual aspects of the product which i will mention in the comment below!

here we go!

musthaves_clothesforclass_2018.png

/ boohoo corduroy pinafore / linea gold loafer mules / topshop green sweater / ten sixty sherman black wrap top / topshop green corduroy skirt / bp gray twist front top / levi’s high waist 501 jeans / leith wrap sweater / converse high top sneakers / nike air force 1 sneakers / free people square neck bodysuit / madewell snap front denim miniskirt /

these are some similar items to what i’ve been wearing in school, unfortunately, now its cold so its actually tights season – and i can continue wearing skirts and pinafores that way! YES! so excited to be sharing more looks as well as starting to share those #OOTDs on my instagram stories before class to share what i am wearing each day!

well, guys i hope you enjoyed & happy shopping!

Plaid Pants & Georgetown Fall

October 22, 2018

($ this post contains affiliate links which may be monetized $)

hello friends!
i don’t know about where you guys are but right now DC has been so so windy! it has been beautiful and sunny with like at least 12mph winds, which has been AH-MAY-ZING! i love east coast fall and that is all. since i’ve been in the thick of fall i’ve been transitioning into a real fall wardrobe, which i’ve never really had because california falls are basically the same as winter, and it quickly goes from summer to winter. i’m having loads of fun with different pants, dresses, and skirts with new and fall-y materials. i ALWAYS love a good plaid pant (which y’all of course know already) and i found this super affordable pair at forever 21! not only are they super comfy and soft (they feel like pajamas!!!) but they’re also super chic and can be dressed up to be fancy & nice.
since i found the PERFECT PANTS to share with you, i decided to go to one of my favorite places in dc! my roommates and i went to go shopping in georgetown and then went house touring find our favorite spots. i always told myself that one day i would live in DC and specifically in georgetown because the houses ARE my aesthetic. they’re so beautiful, i love the classic ones, the ones that are painted with colors and the brick ones. i just think they’re so beautiful and definitely would love to live there!

so, on with the show right! here’s my look

October 17, 2018

($ this post contains affiliate links which may be monetized $)

hey all!
i’ve been thinking about halloween a lot recently because its coming and its in less than 2 weeks! ah exciting! around here, in my art school, there’s a big halloween costume party this weekend! i’m so excited and i’ll definitely be sharing live updates from the event itself and its so exciting! even though i have class on halloween my friends and i are thinking about trick or treating on embassy row – which is supposed to be super fun but of course i’ll keep y’all updated on my plans as always. and today, i’m sharing some halloween costume stuff! most people know i am REALLY not a costume fan so today i was decided to share some costumes you could put together with either clothes you already own – or with clothes you could buy and wear again!
as always, a note to all my readers – this post does not mean i own any of the above, or that i will buy any of the above. it just means that i like it visually and (unless noted) i do not own it; all that i will write about is stuff i hear from friends and other users of the product as well as the visual aspects of the product which i will mention in the comment below!

College Night Routine

October 15, 2018

hey all!
its me, back again! hello how are y’all doing? we’re PRETTY into fall and especially here the weather has turned over! its been absolutely beautiful! i mean i’ve been seeing the trees change for the last few weeks but the last thing we needed for the TRUE feeling of fall was the weather. i love the cool winds and my runs feel even better with all of that weather we’ve been able to experience here in the DMV area!
yes yes, we’re into fall, and into the school year yeah kate we get it, you’re a broken record. yes, i am a broken record but its actually been quite awhile since i shared a night routine, and since i’ve started college my night routine has changed, i mean naturally right? i’m living in a different city with a different climate, i’m living in a dorm with three other roommates and just essentially we’re headed into winter so yeah, here’s my typical routine for the weeknights!

8pm

8pm_2018

at 8pm i’d say i start my ‘night routine’ officially. if i haven’t already started i start getting my homework wrapped up. since i’m an art student some of my homework includes either coming up with ideas or sketching stuff out so i work in my sketchbook and get stuff done. a decent amount of my homework is reading, i am usually given readings for certain classes but right now in design we’re talking about the color theory in terms of simple design so i picked up josef alber’s ‘interaction of color’ and i find it REALLY interesting actually! if i drink tea at night the last time i’d do that is 8pm, its kinda nice while doing homework to drink tea especially while reading.

9pm

9pm_2018

by 9pm i try to be done eating for the night. i am not always successful with this so i often eat ice cream, an apple or my peanut butter oatmeal dough *(recipe will be shared later)*. i continue doing my homework and i write in my journal. my typical bullet journal display is a to-do list so i see what i’ve accomplished and what i need to accomplish for the next day. to this point i try to turn off any tv and try to listen to music or podcasts, i’ve been LOVING serial!

10pm

10pm_2018

around 10 i start washing my face and continue finishing my homework. i shower in the middle of the day after running usually, so i change into my pajamas and then get started on my routine. i wash my face with glossier milky jelly with my foreo, followed by glossier solution and i try to kill my acne with mario badescu’s drying lotion!

11pm -12am

11-12_2018.gif

i’m usually done with my homework by 11, unless my class ends at 11 (which my routine is just all these steps combined into 1 hour) and i move to packing my backpack. i make sure i have EVERYTHING for the next day ahead of me, packing my sketchbook, notebooks, books and bullet journal and leaving my computer to charge on my desk. i leave my water bottle out and my keys out so they’re easy to grab while i’m on my way out. i then head to bed and set my alarm for the next morning!

enjoy all!

Thing I Love : October 2018

October 12, 2018

hello all!
happy friday! fridays are my days off so i’ve already gotten to pick up an acai bowl this morning while running AND cleaning my dorm and doing laundry, so yeah i’d say its been a pretty successful morning.
for forever i’ve been seeing people collect their favorite links and share them with their audiences and i’ve always wanted to do that. if you know me you’ll know one thing, i always have at least 30 tabs open on my computer, these are everything from essays and homework assignments to shopping links, recipes and buzzfeed, who what wear or my favorite blog articles. so for sure, i have the links to say it basically and its so easy to talk about it so why not!
here we go!

// 1. town and country magazine made a list of the best fall movies in aesthetics, looking at the list makes me just want to heat up some cider and cuddle into my bed! //

// 2. don’t @ me, but i’ve been obsessed with shane dawson’s collaboration about jake paul, if you haven’t seen or heard about it you aren’t on youtube very often because EVERYONE seems to be talking about it there, but its very intriguing to say the least. //

// 3. currently i’m trying out more cooking at school and i’ve been trying to find some amazing recipes. we have a full sized kitchen with a stovetop and an oven but we don’t have any blenders or other appliances like that i’ve found these recipes for pumpkin risotto and spicy acorn squash with feta //

// 4. who what wear’s collection of forever 21 under $40 picks has my eyes and wallet VERY excited for some adorable picks! i especially love the faux red croc tote that they featured and it would go perfect with my fall palette and its just super chic! //

// 5. when i run now i can almost no longer listen to music, i easily get bored and my mind wanders, HOWEVER, i have been listening to podcasts, in addition to my usual favorites: ‘getting curious’, ‘the daily’ and ‘the good place podcast’ my roommate suggested i listen to serial and i’ve been obsessed ever since. //

// 6. my sister’s friend cami has a really cool food instagram called ‘@camikeepseatingthings’ she’s given me some amazing college food inspo and honestly her photos always make me so hungry!  //

// 7. finally, i’ve been getting back into pinterest, some of you might had noticed i’d been a bit inactive there because i was busy BUT i’m back! and better than ever get ready for tons more sharing very soon! //
